Skidaway Island is unique in many ways, perhaps none so much as its sense of being a community rather than a resort. Many of our residents live on the island fulltime and a growing percentage are still a part of the workforce and are raising families within the gates. Kiwanis Club of Skidaway has designed its major fundraising efforts for the year around three annual community-wide, fun-based events. To quote Scott Lauretti, editor of The Skinnie, a local magazine:

“The Chili Cook-Off warms island residents’ stomachs in November; the Pancake Breakfast provides a hardy start to a February day; and the Concert on the Green makes for a late-spring musical celebration in the beginning of May. All three programs have assumed well-established places on the local social calendar each year.”

Crowds pushing 1500 have become the norm and a great time is had by all. 2010 Chili Cook-off

Plans for this year’s are to change the event to the First Annual International Food Festival. It will be held on Saturday, November 12, on the Landings Athletic Field. A wide array of ethnic restaurants are being invited to participate. This idea reinforces the international nature of Kiwanis and should attract a broader group of patrons. This year, there will truly be something for everyone! Activities for kids will be expanded, so it is an event for the entire family.
